Decision guide

Should I text my ex?

Sometimes yes. Sometimes absolutely not. The better question is whether contact is respectful, useful and emotionally manageable in your specific situation.

Four checks before you send

Boundary: Have they asked you not to contact them or blocked you? Do not work around that.

Motive: Are you trying to communicate—or trying to force relief from anxiety?

Message: Can you say what you need to say without guilt, pressure, jealousy or repeated follow-ups?

Outcome: Can you accept silence or “no” without escalating?

Reasons to wait

Wait if you are highly activated, intoxicated, angry, monitoring their social media for clues, or drafting a message whose real purpose is to make them jealous or afraid of losing you.

If contact seems appropriate

Keep the first message proportionate. You usually do not need to solve the relationship in one text. A short, genuine message that leaves room for the other person to choose whether to engage is easier to receive.
