Texting an ex

What to text your ex when contact makes sense.

The strongest first message is usually simpler than the one you have been rewriting for two hours. Aim for clarity, warmth and low pressure—not a perfect line that is supposed to produce a specific reaction.

A useful framework

Context + sincerity + space. Give a natural reason for reaching out, say something genuine, and leave the other person room to respond—or not.

Example structure: “Hey, I’ve had some time to think about things. I hope you’re doing okay. If you’re open to talking sometime, I’d be glad to hear from you.”

What to avoid

Avoid message barrages, fake emergencies, jealousy bait, threats, guilt, sexual pressure, or pretending the breakup never happened. Do not bypass a block using another account or number.

If they reply

Match the pace of the conversation. A reply is permission for that conversation, not proof that the relationship is restored. If the exchange becomes mutual and constructive, a later conversation can address what actually caused the breakup.
